February 2010
February 2010

As the final few weeks of Patrick's long and illustrious training career drew to a close a number of our Flat horses ran on the all-weather courses at Southwell and Wolverhampton hoping to achieve one final and deserved winner for the master currently of Castle Hill Stables, and previously other stables in Middleham, as well as both Newmarket and Lambourn. Unfortunately the elusive final winner could not be achieved, although frustratingly Patrick did record 3 second placings during February.

On the first day of the month, and for the second consecutive time, Adam De Beaulieu and Cross The Boss ran in the same race, both of which were 7 furlong Maiden races at Wolverhampton, but on this occasion Adam De Beaulieu came out clearly the better. 10 days earlier only a short-head had separated our 2 runners, finishing in third and fourth places respectively, but this time, whilst Greg Fairley again had Alistair Dinsmore's 3 year old prominent throughout, he actually led 2 furlongs from home only to be headed a furlong out and beaten into second place by a very above average looking newcomer. There appeared to be some well-regarded maiden 3 year olds behind, including of course our own Cross The Boss 6 lengths back in 5th place, and this may turn out to have been quite a decent race. Certainly this was another good performance by Adam De Beaulieu for whom, as also with Cross The Boss, handicaps will now be an option.

One of our most consistent horses in the past couple of years has been River Ardeche who has made the frame in 9 of his 17 races. River Ardeche also made the journey to Wolverhampton to contest a 9 furlong Class 4 handicap. Ridden by Paddy Donaghy, Mark James and Mrs Christine Barclay's 5 year old led for much of the race and was not headed until inside the final furlong when he also had to settle for second place, beaten one and three quarter lengths. This was an improved performance on River Ardeche's recent runs and hopefully augers well for the new Turf season now less than a month away.

The honour of being Patrick's final runner fell to Ivestar, owned by Middleham Park Racing, who ran in a 1 mile 3 furlong Maiden handicap at Southwell on Feb 9th. It would have made a wonderful accolade had Ivestar been able to prevail but whilst he did become our third 2nd placing of the month, perhaps it should be mentioned quietly that on this occasion there were only the 2 runners ! The winning distance was exaggerated by Ivestar rightly being eased when clearly beaten.

So whilst Patrick's training career ends there are nevertheless tremendously exciting times ahead at Castle Hill Stables as the mantle now passes to Ben who takes over the licence in his own name. Ben will very shortly be opening his own website and full details of his horses in training, entries / results, news items, horses for sale, etc, may then be obtained by entering his website address benhaslamracing.com.

January 2010
January 2010

As mentioned in the final news column of 2009 there were very few runners from Castle Hill Stables during the early part of January. However, two of our promising and well-bred maiden 3 year olds, and each having just their second race, Adam Be Beaulieu ( by the American sire Broken Vow, and owned by Alistair Dinsmore ) and Cross The Boss ( out of Cape Cross, and owned by the Widdop Wanderers ) both contested a Maiden Stakes race over 7 furlongs at Wolverhampton and both equipped themselves well with just a short head between them at the line. Adam De Beaulieu, with Greg Fairley in the saddle, stayed on the inside and was prominent throughout eventually finishing third, whilst Cross The Boss, ridden by Paddy Donaghy, was held up in the early stages but made headway late on the outside to take 4th place. These were promising runs by both horses and there should be better to come in the not too distant future.

As runners are now starting to flow from Castle Hill Stables it is clear that our horses are beginning to run well and the decision to have a quiet time in terms of runners in December and January should, as was intended, pay dividends once the new Flat Turf season gets under way towards the end of March.

By now everyone will be aware that Patrick has decided to retire from training and hand over the licence at Castle Hill Stables to Ben; details of Patrick's announcement, and of Ben's own background, already appear below on this news column. Further details will appear in February's news once the changeover has taken effect, suffice to say at the moment that we all send our very best wishes to both Patrick in his retirement, and Ben at the start of his new career.

Ben will be opening his own new website as soon as his training career commences on 20th Feb 2010. Full details of Ben's website address will be given in the February news on this column, and we all hope that everyone will access Ben's new website on a regular basis to continue to obtain details of entries, results, news items and horses for sale, etc, at Castle Hill Stables.

ANNOUNCEMENT

I have decided to retire from training and hand over the licence of Castle Hill Stables to my son, Ben. We have recently moved into a new stable in Middleham which has been updated for Ben and his new venture. Ben has to complete the trainers module on 19th February and will be issued with his licence on Saturday 20th February 2010.

Ben, who is 25, was born in Newmarket and moved to Middleham in North Yorkshire in 1991. He was educated locally at Aysgarth school and then went to Shrewsbury public school where he did well academically. He has been around racehorses all his life, riding out and helping in the yard and as an amateur rode 5 winners on the flat from 25 rides. During his gap year he worked for Joey Ramsden in South Africa as a pupil trainer. He then won a scholarship with Godolphin (Sheikh Mohammed’s scheme for young people going into racing). This involved travelling to and working in various parts of the world in the racing industry, i.e. the Curragh in Ireland, Kentucky and Santa Anita in America, Sydney in Australia and Godolphin in Dubai. Ben was able to study all aspects of the thoroughbred industry during this time. Back in England, Ben spent time with Sir Michael Stoute in Newmarket before finishing his course in 2006 when he return to Middleham and worked as Assistant Trainer to his father Patrick for 3½ years.

Ben will start with about 30 horses of which 17 will be 2 year olds. He is fortunate that some of our loyal owners are keeping horses with him, these include Alastair Dinsmore, Mark James, Middleham Park Racing and the Blue Lion Racing Partnership. My wife Anne and myself will be active in the background to support the new trainer. There will be an emphasis on top class stable management and good placing of horses that come to the stable.

Ben will obviously be keen to take on new owners and horses as the stable develops and would be very pleased to show anyone around the establishment and the excellent gallops and facilities that we have in Middleham.'

December 2009
December 2009

Very few runners from Castle Hill Stables during December 2009, and this is likely to continue during January 2010, due partly to the exceptionally cold weather which is currently playing havoc with the turf meetings but also as a result of the decision taken by Patrick and Ben to focus attention on ensuring that our horses are fit and healthy, and ready to run well from the start of the 2010 Flat season which opens towards the end of March. To this end we are likely to have relatively few runners until February and we are sure that putting this emphasis on the forthcoming Flat campaign will reap it's rewards in the coming months.

Life continues to go well at our new Castle Hill Stables and everyone, including of course the horses, has settled in well. All our yearlings, now naturally 2 year olds since the 1st January, have now been sold with the exception of the fillies out of Statue Of Liberty and Kheleyf which are available for sale at very reasonable prices given their breeding ( please see the " Horses For Sale " page of this website ).

We have also very recently a acquired a filly by the speedy sire Captain Rio, and whose dam is Dunbrody. This filly is available for leasing only, i.e. training fees only payable, no initial outlay. Anyone interested in leasing this promising filly can still, of course, run the horse in their own name and will receive all prize money in the normal way. If you are interested in this opportunity please telephone the office on 01969 624351. As always, a number of small shares are still available for purchase in some of our other horses, again please contact our stable if you are interested in owning a small share in one of our horses - these costs are always very reasonable. Whatever type of deal suits you best you can always be assured we will do our best at Castle Hill Stables to accommodate you !

Finally, everyone at Castle Hill Stables wishes all our readers the happiest of New Years, and a most prosperous 2010. Please continue to visit our website regularly for updates on all that is happening at our new stable, including entries, results, news items and horses for sale, etc.

November 2009
November 2009

As the 2009 Flat season on turf draws to a close it's time for our relatively small band of jumpers to take centre stage although we will, of course, continue to have many runners on the all-weather this winter as always. For the next few months our jumpers will have to do without the services of one of our regular jump jockeys, Barry Keniry, who is still recovering from a broken leg suffered in a fall at Kelso in the middle of October.

Heraldry, owned by Alurie O'Sullivan, starts the month off by contesting a 4 runner Class 4 Beginners' Chase at Haydock over two and a half miles. The ground at the Lancashire course is heavy and Heraldry, having his first run for the best part of 8 months, struggles in the later stages of the race but nevertheless completes the race and finishes in 3rd place. The race should at least have brought Heraldry on. Before the end of the month Heraldry appears again, this time in a 2 miles 6 furlong hurdle race at Wetherby. This is a more competitive race and Heraldry is on the heels of the leaders for most of the race and ultimately finishes 4th of the 9 runners, beaten just over 8 lengths.

Hi Dancer, who is owned by R Tocher, is another of our jumpers to do a double stint in November. Firstly he runs in an extended 2 mile 6 furlong Class 3 handicap hurdle at Kelso under our own conditional jockey Blake Storrie. Although outpaced in the early stages of the race Hi Dancer keeps on well from the last and finishes best of all to take 4th place, beaten 6 and a half lengths. A week later Hi Dancer is upped in trip to take in a Class 4 3 mile 1 furlong handicap hurdle race at Wetherby and after chasing the leaders in the latter stages weakens approaching the last to finish a creditable third, this time beaten 8 and a half lengths. This third place means that our wonderfully consistent 6 year old has now finished in the first three in exactly half his 46 races ( winning 9 of them ) which have included many races on the Flat and over hurdles, plus 4 races over fences.

On the same card at Wetherby Mark James' 3 year old Flaming Blaze runs his best race to date finishing second at 20-1 in a selling hurdle. Flaming Blaze keeps on from 2 out and we hope to be able to find a winning opportunity for him before too long.

We have had a good response to the yearlings available for sale which we included on our Horses For Sale page of this website last month. Accordingly the fillies out of Kyllachy and Redback, and the colts out of Antonius Pius and Sleeping Indian, are no longer available. However the fillies by Statue Of Liberty and Kheleyf, and the colt by Avonbridge, are still available. Additionally Ben has recently purchased another filly by the excellent sire Kyllachy, notable for many speedy types, and this filly ( which has already been named Dance Free ) is now available to be purchased for a very reasonable cost of just £5,750. As always please contact the office on 01969 624351 if you are interested in buying any of these yearlings, or shares therein, and look at our Horses For Sale page for updates of the horses available for sale at our new Castle Hill Stables in Middleham.

October 2009
October 2009

A quiet, and ultimately sad, month on the racecourse, but nevertheless an exciting one away from the track.

On the first day of the month Elie Shore, Middleham Park Racing's 2 year old filly, was in the process of running a fine race, and certainly her best to date, in a Wolverhampton claiming race when, whilst still a close third, she was badly hampered inside the final furlong and could not recover, eventually having to settle for eighth place after appearing certain to finish in the frame for the first time.

A week later another of our 2 year olds, this time Bateau Bleu, made the same journey to Wolverhampton for a nursery. After being held up in the rear in the early stages Bateau Bleu made good headway over a furlong out, and then kept on at one pace to take 4th place. This was nevertheless a decent run by Bateau Bleu who had been successful in his previous race at Nottingham over 2 furlongs further and hopefully Sheila Mason and Robert Stipetic's gelding will return to the winners enclosure before too long.

The sad side of racing revealed itself later in the month when our Juvenile hurler Miss Gibboa was one of a number of casualties at Wetherby. Miss Gibboa had shown herself to be a very promising hurdler but sadly she took a fatal fall at the second last hurdle. We all extend our sympathies to owner Andrew Sparks.

However exciting times are ahead for our stable in that we have completed our move from one side of Middleham Castle to the other, and our horses are now housed in new stables, known as Castle Hill Stables. Anyone who visited our previous yard, Manor House Stables, should have no difficulty in finding us as we are only a minute or so's walk from it. We all look forward to bringing great success to Castle Hill Stables and we await to see which of our horses will have the honour of becoming our first winner from Castle Hill Stables !

Finally, as always Ben and Patrick have been attending the Newmarket and Doncaster Yearling Sales in the past few months. Ben is especially delighted with his purchases, many of which are currently available for sale for a relatively modest outlay  --  please see the Horses For Sale page of this website for details of the yearlings presently for sale. This page will, of course, be updated in future months to show details of further horses which are available for sale.

More news from Castle Hill Stables next month !  Please contact us at the stable ( tel. no. 01969 624351 ) if you are interested in becoming an owner with Patrick right from the start of this exciting venture !

September 2009
September 2009

This is certainly a month which will be remembered for a series of good performances by our horses  --  at big prices !

Following a quiet August, September kicks off in promising style when, on the first day of the month, Novay Essjay runs an excellent race to take third place at 18-1 in a Class 4 Ripon nursery over 6 furlongs. On only his third racecourse appearance, and his first for three and a half months, Novay Essjay is held up in the early stages by Paddy Donaghy but once switched 2 furlongs out chases the two leaders and keeps on well in the final furlong to finish 3rd beaten around one and a half lengths. Later in the month Novay Essjay runs 3 more creditable races just failing to make the frame on each occasion.

The first Saturday of September sees our first winner of the month when Dance For Julie takes a Class 4 maiden race at Thirsk over 6 furlongs under Paddy Donaghy. This is a greatly deserved first success for Mark James' 2 year old filly. Following  a third and two second places  on good to firm going Dance For Julie now encounters soft ground for the first time. Paddy has her close up throughout the race and after going clear over a furlong out the filly stays on strongly to record a one and three quarter length victory. Later in month Dance For Julie turns out again in a 6 furlong Hamilton nursery but this time has to settle for 6th place.

The following day Victoire De Lyphar contests a Class 4 nursery at York over 7 furlongs. Despite already having both won and finished second in races at Doncaster this season Victoire De Lyphar is allowed to start at odds of 25-1 but the gelding belies those odds to finish a good second of 12 runners. Philip Makin is in the saddle on this occasion and he has Middleham Park Racing's 2 year old in the lead until approaching 2 out. Victoire De Lyphar runs on at one pace towards the finish and eventually has to settle for second place, beaten just half a length. Victoire De Lyphar is yet another of our 2 year olds to runs again before the month ends, finishing 6th in another York nursery.

A good class card at Market Rasen on the final Saturday of the month reminds us that the new jumps season is about to get into full swing and Patrick sends Miss Gibboa down to the Lincolnshire track to run in what is probably the best Juvenile hurdle race so far this season, a Class 2 race over an extended 2 miles 1 furlong. Andrew Sparks' 3 year old filly finished second in her only previous hurdle race but no doubt because of the quality of the field is another of our runners who starts at long odds, this time 33-1, and then proceeds to contradict those long odds with an excellent run. Ridden by Barry Keniry Miss Gibboa is settled in midfield but having appeared to get outpaced runs on well in the home straight, keeping on especially well on the flat to take 3rd place close home. Although beaten 14 lengths this is an extremely creditable run in decent company.

We have to wait until the final day of September to record our second winner of the month but it's well worth waiting for as Patrick continues to prove that starting at long odds is not necessarily detrimental to a horses chances of winning. This time it's the turn of Bateau Bleu to show scant regard for his starting price of 66-1 in a Class 5 nursery at Nottingham. Ridden by Kelly Harrison Bateau Bleu is slowly into his stride and is held up for much of the race. However Bateau Bleu makes good headway 2 furlongs out and stays on very strongly inside the final furlong to win by one and a half lengths. This is a tremendous improvement on Bateau Bleu's 3 previous runs, the last of which was over 3 months ago since when he has also been gelded. No doubt the longer distance of today's race, 10 furlongs, contributed to the improved performance but the race certainly augers well for the future of the 2 year old  who is owned by Sheila Mason and Robert Stipetic. This and other races this month also serve to confirm how well our horses are running at present.

With our thoughts starting to turn towards the new National Hunt season Manor House Stables are pleased to have received a further 2 horses from owner J P McManus. Bucephalas, previously trained in Ireland, and Inthejungle, formerly trained in France, are both ready to run shortly and we look forward to both horses having a successful jumps campaign this winter.

Finally, we can announce that our stable is moving, but only a matter of yards, to the other side of Middleham Castle in fact ! We have acquired land very adjacent to our present stables and hopefully this short move should take place before the end of October. Full details of our new stables will appear in next months news column, as will details of the yearlings bought by Ben and Patrick at the forthcoming sales which are available for purchase.

August 2009
August 2009

A quiet month in terms of runners, the best performance probably coming from our wonderfully consistent dual-purpose horse Hi Dancer. Having already been campaigned on the Flat and over fences in 2009, the 6 year old, owned by R. Tocher, this time contests a Class 4 Handicap Hurdle at Market Rasen. After chasing the leaders Hi Dancer takes 2nd place approaching 2 out but cannot reach the winner and has to settle for a fine second place under Barry Keniry.

Other meritous performances during August include Alphacino who cannot quite follow up his win at Thirsk 2 weeks earlier but nevertheless puts in another good effort to finish 5th in a nursery at Beverley, Destiny's Dancer who runs another solid race to also finish 5th in a Ripon maiden, and Charmaxjoanne who shows improved form following her debut run to take 4th place in a Newcastle claiming race ( our newcomer Elie Shore makes a promising introduction to finish 5th in the same race ).

It is also good to get Ares Choix, one of our best 2 year olds last season, back on the racecourse and whilst she is never able to challenge the leaders in a Class 1 Listed Race at Pontefract she will certainly come on nicely for the run.

We are also pleased to have received a communication from Cath Hill, partner of jockey Paul Goode who suffered horrendous injuries in a fall in Australia at the end of June. Cath tells us that Paul is currently in the Spinal Unit of the Prince Of Wales Hospital in Sydney. Prior to recently contracting an infection Paul has been able to leave his bed and use a wheelchair for a couple of hours twice a day. Paul is also looking forward to having his neck brace removed shortly which will be big step forward. Hopes are still high that Paul will soon be able to go into a Rehabilitation Unit which will aid his recovery. Paul and Cath thank everyone who has sent their best wishes and we are sure that all readers will join everyone at Manor House Stables in wishing Paul that his recovery continues to go well. We will, of course, provide further updates on Paul's condition in future months.

Finally, the 2009 Yearling Sales are now getting under way and Ben recently attended the Doncaster Bloodstock Sales. Ben purchased 5 yearlings at these sales  --  one of which is still available for sale and we can therefore offer our first yearling of 2009 for sale !  This is a filly ( EBF Nominated ) by the American bred, though Irish trained, Statue Of Liberty whose wins included the Group 3 Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot in 2002 and who was also 2nd in the Group 1 Sussex Stakes at Goodwood in 2003. Since being retired to stud in 2004 Statue Of Liberty has sired the winners of 136 races and won over £1,500,000. The dam, Miss Megs, won 2 races in Ireland as a 3 year old. This filly is offered for sale at only £12,000 + VAT ( shares are available at correspondingly reduced amounts ).

This is an early opportunity to purchase a horse which will run as a 2 year old during the 2010 Flat Season. As always details of all yearlings purchased by Patrick and Ben and available for sale will appear on the Horses For Sale page of this website in future months. If you are interested in buying a horse trained by Patrick at Manor House Stables please look at our website, and particularly the Horses For Sale page, regularly as we will be giving details of many more yearlings in the coming months. Please contact our office on telephone number 01969 624351 if you are interested in purchasing a horse at Manor House Stables.

July 2009
July 2009

The month opens with our of our most consistent horses, Hi Dancer, reverting to hurdles after taking in two Lady Amateur flat races in June. On this occasion the 6 year old contests a Class 4 2 mile 6 furlong Conditional Jockeys' handicap hurdle at Market Rasen under the very promising Felix De Giles. This proves to be yet another good performance but although Hi Dancer makes headway to track the leaders 3 out he ultimately has to settle for third place after a mistake at the last. Later in the month Hi Dancer runs in another Class 4 handicap hurdle , this time at Uttoxeter. Ridden now by Barry Keniry Hi Dancer keeps on at one pace in the closing stages to finish 4th.

On the 2 year old front one our most consistent youngsters is proving to be Dance For Julie. Mark James' filly out of Redback runs her third highly promising race from each of her three outings to date in a 5 furlong maiden race at Beverley with Paul Mulrennan in the saddle. Tracking the leaders and making headway 2 furlongs out Dance For Julie is denied a clear run and has to be switched by Paul but cannot quite reach the leader and has to settle for 2nd place again. Following a third and a second in her first 2 races Dance For Julie is inching closer to the winner with each race and surely a victory is entitled to be just around the corner.

On the final day of July comes our first winner of the month courtesy of Alphacino, owned by Alistair Dinsmore. Following seven consistent but unsuccessful runs for Mick Channon, Alphacino was claimed by Patrick after his last race and he receives an immediate return when contesting a 7 furlong claiming race at Thirsk. Alphacino is today ridden by Hayley Turner, having her first ride for Manor House Stables, and after making headway on the outside 2 furlongs out leads approaching the final furlong and despite hanging left keeps on well to record a one length victory  --  a good ride from the high-profile Hayley. Having only had the horse for just over a week this is a great training performance by Patrick and hopefully, having now achieved a victory, Alphacino will be able to reward Alistair with further successes.

Readers will recall from our column last month that our former apprentice, Paul Goode, had suffered a horrific fall whilst riding in Australia. We have received no recent news as to Paul's condition but everyone at Manor House Stables is continuing to keep their fingers crossed for Paul in the hope his recovery goes as well as possible and we will let you have further reports on Paul's condition in future months.

June 2009
June 2009

A busy month starts with River Ardeche resuming his hurdling career following 2 good placed runs on the flat. Mark James and Mrs Christine Barclays' consistent 4 year old contests a Class 4 handicap hurdle at Sedgefield over 2 miles 1 furlong and after leading early in the race is hampered approaching the last and weakens to finish third.

A couple of days later Whispered Times makes up for an unlucky debut run at Doncaster in May by impressively landing a 6 furlong maiden race at Hamilton. Mrs Edward O'Leary's 2 year old out of the American sire More Than Ready is partnered by top Northern jockey Phillip Makin and leads 2 furlongs out and then asserts his authority inside the final furlong to win by one and a half lengths. Whispered Times loves the fast ground he encounters here and Ben is very impressed indeed with the colt. ( Whispered Times is, incidentally, available for sale  --  please see separate ad. )

The next day another of our promising 2 year olds, Victoire De Lyphar, also shows the benefit of his racecourse debut just one week earlier by convincingly taking a Class 5 6 furlong maiden race at Doncaster. Phillip Makin makes smooth headway 2 furlongs out on Middleham Park Racings' colt, going on to lead a furlong out and quickly drawing clear in the race for the line. This was a very professional performance and Victoire De Lyphar looks the type to win more races on this display. 2 nice winning rides in 2 days for Manor House Stables from Phillip Makin !

Two more 2 year olds then make the short journey to Redcar and equip themselves satisfactorily. Blue Emirate runs 3rd of 5 in a 6 furlong Maiden Stakes on his racecourse debut, whilst Bothwell Castle having his second career outing finishes 3rd of 11 in a 6 furlong claimer. One week later Bothwell Castle takes 4th place in a 6 furlong selling race at Thirsk.

Whilst our 2 year olds are having such a busy time we mustn't forget that jump racing is still going on and over in that sphere Miss Gibboa makes her hurdles debut in a Class 4 Juvenile Novices' Hurdle at Sedgefield. Despite the race being dominated by a 4/11 hotpot, Andrew Sparks 3 year old is the only horse to make a race of it with the favourite. Lying handy in second place Miss Gibboa hits the 2nd last after which she keeps on at the same pace and is beaten only 4 lengths in second place with the third horse a further 36 lengths away ! This is easily the filly's best run to date and hopefully she will now build on this fine start to her hurdling career. Another of our 3 year olds, Inca Slew, runs 5th in the same race.

Back to the Flat and River Ardeche finishes 3rd for the second time this month ( the previous race being over hurdles ) in a mile and a half Class 4 handicap at Thirsk, beaten just over a length. Mark James' 2 year old Dance For Julie runs her second good race finishing 2nd of 14 runners in a 6 furlong Maiden Fillies race at Pontefract. Her first success deserves not to be far away.

Another of Manor House Stables most consistent horses in recent years has been Hi Dancer. Having been campaigned over fences and hurdles in his 2 previous races Hi Dancer now returns to the Flat in a 1 mile 5 furlong Lady Amateur Riders' Handicap at Hamilton under our own Emily Stead, also successful on the 6 year old when spread-eagling the field at Southwell last January. This time Hi Dancer, owned by Middleham Park Racing. travels well throughout the race before leading 3 out and drawing clear inside the final furlong. This is a 9th career success for Hi Dancer and it's now 2 winners, from only 6 rides, for Emily.

Before June ends Victoire De Lyphar tries to follow up his Doncaster success earlier in the month by returning to the South Yorkshire track this time for a 7 furlong Class 3 Stakes race. Victoire De Lyphar is pushed along from 2 out but is soon headed and keeps on at one pace in the final furlong, and despite starting favourite has to give second best on this occasion, being beaten one and a quarter lengths. Nevertheless this is another good performance from Middleham Park Racings' 2 year old.

Away from the racecourse it's a welcome to our stable for apprentice Flat jockey Sam Drury  --  we hope to find rides for Sam very soon.

Finally this month we have to end on a sad note. Paul Goode, a former apprentice jockey at Manor House Stables, suffered multiple spinal fractures in a horror fall in Australia on 29 June. Paul was apprenticed to us for around 5 years between 1996 and 2000 and rode approximately 50 winners for Patrick during that time, more than any other jockey before or since. Paul also met his wife Cath, who was then secretary at Manor House Stables, here and they moved to Australia in 2003 to further Paul's career as a jockey. Subsequent to the fall Paul has undergone surgery and the latest news we have is that he is making a slow, steady recovery. Since the fall we have received lots of phone calls, etc, at the office asking for news of Paul's condition, and also asking for good wishes to be passed on to Paul and Cath from so many people who remember them both here. Everyone at Manor House Stables is desperately upset at the accident and we hope to be able to let you have further news on Paul's condition in our July 2009 news.

Horse For Sale!!!!!

FOR SALE

2 year old colt  --  Whispered Times

Sire:  More Than Ready ( USA )
Dam:  Lightning Show ( USA )

An opportunity has arisen to purchase one of the leading 2 year olds trained by Patrick at Manor House Stables, a pure American bred horse. Whispered Times was bought by Ben at the Tattersalls Craven Breeze-Up Sale at Newmarket in April 2009.  He is a typical American 2 year old who loves hard, fast ground.

Whispered Times has had 2 races to date. His debut run was in a 5 furlong Doncaster maiden and despite dwelling at the start he travelled extremely well during the race before being denied a clear run a furlong from home, still managing to finish 4th.

His second race was at Hamilton over 6 furlongs and he quickly showed the benefit of that experience. With the leaders throughout the race, he led 2 furlongs out to win nicely by one and a half lengths. Whispered Times also clearly benefited from the extra furlong  --  he is a really progressive type, and seems sure to run well in nurseries later in the season although he may ultimately prove to be above that grade.

Whispered Times has already shown himself to be a very exciting prospect and a colt who may possibly prove himself to be a top 2 year old.  A colt such as this is sure to be exceptionally popular to prospective buyers and anyone interested in purchasing this horse is welcome to contact the office here at Manor House Stables, Middleham,  --  telephone 01969 624351.  The price is negotiable.

Into May and Patrick starts to push into full swing with many of the considerable number of 2 year olds at Manor House Stables this year.

The honour of being the stables first 2 year old winner this season falls to Novay Essjay. A chesnut colt out of Novarre and owned by Middleham Park Racing, he makes his racecourse debut in a Class 5 5 furlong Maiden race at Ripon. Ridden by Paddy Donaghy, Novay Essjay makes headway 2 furlongs out and is switched wide by Paddy to make a sustained challenge and is able to stay on strongly inside in the final furlong to lead near the line to record a short head victory. This is a very promising introduction indeed. Novay Essjay is one of nine 2 year olds bought by Ben at the Breeze-Up Sales this year, and the first of them to run.

One week later Novay Essjay runs again at Newcastle, this time upped in both class and trip ( to 6 furlongs ). Again Novay Essjay equips himself well and shows good speed for a long way but is unable to quicken in the final furlong, nevertheless finishing a respectable 5th. Novay Essjay also has to encounter different ground for this second run, the going at Newcastle being changed from good to firm to good to soft during the day after 15 mm of rain, and possibly the extra furlong on the rain softened ground counts against him on this occasion. However Novay Essjay has unquestionably put in 2 extremely good races in the space of a week to start his racecourse career in good style.

Next to make his racecourse debut is Whispered Times in a 5 furlong Doncaster Maiden. Despite dwelling at the start Whispered Times travels well and is alongside the leaders before meeting traffic problems a furlong from home although he still ultimately finishes in 4th place. This is clearly an unlucky run, but more importantly a very encouraging run, and hopefully he will quickly put these experiences behind him and he certainly looks one for the notebook.

Later in the month another 2 year old, Dance For Julie, has her first run in a 6 furlong Redcar Maiden, Starting at 40-1 Mark James' filly out of Redback belies those odds and despite being slowly into her stride Dance For Julie makes headway from halfway and keeps on well in the final furlong to take 3rd place. Yet another highly satisfactory debut performance.

On the same card Park's Prodigy, now a 5 year old who has run under both codes in recent seasons, surprises many onlookers by turning out for an Amateur Riders' Handicap over 6 furlongs. Park's Prodigy had never previously raced over a distance shorter than 1 mile and his latest start, almost 7 months earlier, had been in a 2 miles 4 furlongs Novice Chase, but Patrick clearly felt he had an ace up his sleeve and almost pulls off an amazing result. Ridden by our stable amateur, Emily Stead, Park's Prodigy stays on strongly in the final furlong to take 4th place out of the 17 runners, beaten only a little over one and a half lengths.

Finally, Victoire De Lyphar makes a promising debut in a 6 furlong Maiden race at Haydock Park. Although the colt runs green in the early stages of the race he runs on well at the finish to take 6th place and can be expected to come on nicely for the experience.

All in all our horses, and especially our 2 year olds, are beginning to run well and we can look to start knocking in the winners in the near future !

April 2009

Our horses are hot out of the blocks when, on the opening day of the month, River Ardeche runs a fine race to finish second in a 1 mile 6 furlong Class 4 handicap at Catterick. The 4 year old, owned by Mark James and Mrs Christine Barclay, is running for the first time since three consistent runs ( 2 on the all-weather, 1 over hurdles ) in January. On ground that might just have been quicker than ideal, his rider Paddy Donaghy, soon has River Ardeche in the lead and he stays clear of his rivals until being joined and headed inside the final furlong.

One week later River Ardeche shows his adaptability by taking in a 1 mile 4 furlong Class 4 handicap at Kempton's all-weather polytrack surface. Again River Ardeche runs a tremendous race in defeat, being beaten a head and half a length into third. Once more Paddy Donaghy leads the field throughout until being headed a furlong out. This was another sound effort by River Ardeche  --  he is clearly in good heart and it appears he may be starting to fulfil the promise he showed on his debut outing as a 2 year old when successful at York.

Blue Rum becomes the first of our 2 year olds to make the frame this season when taking 3rd place in a 5 furlong claiming race at Thirsk. Owned by Karen Theobald, Blue Rum is another of our horses to lead, until weakening and being headed inside the final furlong. This is a very promising debut run for Blue Rum. Towards the end of the month Blue Rum runs again in a Redcar selling race finishing 4th.

Reigning In Rio, a 3 year old filly out of Captain Rio, returns to Southwell, the scene of her success in February, to take in another race over one mile. Although Reigning In Rio disappointed in an interim race over the same course and distance this time she shows improved form by finishing third. Reigning In Rio also leads from the front and does so until being headed 3 furlongs out after which she runs on at one pace.

Earlier in the month Ben was busy attending the Doncaster and Newmarket Breeze-Up Sales and is delighted to have purchased a number of very promising 2 year olds. These include Fol Wizard ( a colt by Piccolo ), Novay Essjay ( colt by Noverre ) who is entered to run very early in May, Orpen All Hours ( filly by Orpen ), Whispered Times ( colt by the USA sire More Than Ready ), Dancin In The Dark ( filly by Mark Of Esteem ) and 2 currently unnamed colts by Dubai Destination and Broken Vow. All these 2 year olds are fit and well, and should be ready to run very shortly.

Finally, many thanks must go to everyone who attended our annual Good Friday Open Day on April 10th. Shares in some of our horses were sold following the Open Day but for anyone who was unable to attend the Open Day and was not able to take advantage of the offers available we can remind you that shares are always available in certain of our horses, from 5% and 10% upwards, and anyone interested in buying shares in our horses is always welcome to telephone the stable on 01969 624351. Whatever your requirement we will always do our best to accommodate you ! In the meantime we hope everyone who did attend the Open Day enjoyed themselves and we look forward to seeing you all again next year.

March 2009
March 2009

Following the excellent start to 2009 we made in January and February things unfortunately took a downward turn in March when a bout of coughing laid a number of our horses low for a while. However things are now returning to normal and the horses are starting to run well again. The horses return to good health has, of course, coincided with the start of the 2009 Flat Turf season so there is plenty to look forward to, and be optimistic about, for the year ahead.

Before March ended one of our stable stars in recent years, Hi Dancer, took in a 2 and a half miles Novice Chase at Wetherby. The 6 year old was prominent throughout the race and was still close up 4 fences from home and looking a major threat to the favourite. However in the latter stages of the race he came under pressure and could find no extra from the second last. Nevertheless this was a very encouraging performance from Hi Dancer, both in terms of his own prospects as a chaser, and also as a yardstick to our stables return to form. Hi Dancer has been extremely consistent in recent years and has, in fact, finished first, second or third in exactly half of his 38 races !

We can also welcome a new owner to Manor House Stables  --  Andrew Sparks has recently joined us along with his horses Essie Sparks and Miss Gibboa. We wish Andrew and his horses every success with us.

As Easter approaches it's time, of course, for Middleham's Annual Good Friday Open Day on April 10th, always one of the most popular dates in the calendars of Racing fans and visitors to North Yorkshire alike. This year Manor House Stables will be open from 9.00am. Patrick and Ben have recently attended various Breeze-Up Sales and their purchases can be seen in the yard in the morning, and then on the gallops in the afternoon, and some of these 2 year olds will be available for sale, either in full or in shares.

Horses purchased from the Breeze-Up Sales always represent excellent value and the price of the shares will suit all pockets. In the last 6 Breeze-Up Sales alone Patrick and Ben have bought 15 individual winners of 45 races, amassing around £500,000 in win and place prize money ! These horses have included such stable stars as Kinnaird, Riguez Dancer, Choose Your Moment, Duke Of Touraine and Hi Dancer.

There is therefore a tremendous opportunity at our Open Day for anyone to buy a share in another potential top-class horse and our stable representatives will be available in the yard during the morning to assist anyone interested in purchasing a share in these horses, all ready to run 2 year olds ! Don't be afraid to ask  --  you will be made very welcome and the thrill of being a racehorse owner is one never to be missed !

In the afternoon we will be schooling a few of our jumpers over both hurdles and fences on Middleham Low Moor, with the assistance of top jump jockeys Barry Keniry and Paddy Aspell.

We look forward to seeing as many visitors to Middleham's Open Day as possible come along to Manor House Stables on Good Friday  --  and we wish everyone a thoroughly enjoyable day !

February 09

February 2009

The superb start made to 2009 ( 6 winners in January ) continues unabated into February !

Firstly Reigning In Rio opens his account after 3 unsuccessful attempts in 2008. Alurie O'Sullivan's 3 year old filly shows much improved form to take a 1 mile handicap at Southwell. Reigning In Rio is prominent throughout the race and leads 2 furlongs out under Paddy Donaghy to record a pleasing success by 3/4 of a length.

On the same card Riguez Dancer's tremendous run continues as Middleham Park Racing's 5 year old wins his 3rd race in just 16 days. After 2 successes at Wolverhampton Riguez Dancer shows himself to be equally effective on Southwell's fibresand recording a facile 5 lengths victory. Riguez Dancer again makes all, is never in danger of being caught, and Paddy Donaghy, in the saddle for each of the 3 wins, is able to ease him down near the finish. This has been a wonderful couple of weeks for Riguez Dancer who has now won on both the all-weather surfaces, and the 3 victories have been achieved over widely differing distances of 1 mile 6 furlongs, 2 miles 1 furlong and 1 mile 3 furlongs. Further similar opportunities could easily await Riguez Dancer in the short term but Patrick believes he is much better than simply an all-weather horse and prefers to look towards a return to hurdling in the near future.

Next to get his name on the winners list for 2009 is Sheer Fantastic in a one and a half mile handicap at Wolverhampton. The 4 year old, also owned by Middleham Park Racing, is held up in the early stages but leads a furlong out and is driven out to win by a neck, again Paddy Donaghy is the successful rider. This win is also the 5th of 2009 for Middleham Park Racing from Manor House Stables.

This tremendous run since the start of 2009 has seen Patrick consistently on the Racing Post's Hot Trainers list, and the victory of Sheer Fantastic elevates Patrick to the top of the Hot Trainers list  --  a marvellous achievement !

Away from the racecourse, having said in January that our secretary Helen Cuming was leaving at the end of February we must now say hello and give a warm welcome to her successor, Donna Caldwell. Many will no doubt remember Donna as being a very successful rider, having achieved 19 victories on the Flat in recent years  --  hopefully our stables recently successful run will ensure Donna is kept busy !

The Cheltenham Festival will shortly be upon us. Patrick has 3 horses entered for this high-profile meeting and we hope they will all be able to take their chance and run big races.

A note for your diaries is the Good Friday Open Day on 10th April. Manor House Stables will be open from 9am, full details of all the events taking place will feature on this page in March. Patrick and Ben will shortly be attending the Kempton and Doncaster Breeze-Up Sales and the horses ( 2 year olds ) purchased will, of course, be able to be seen at the Open Day  --  for prospective buyers shares will be available in these horses to suit all pockets !

As far as horses currently available for sale are concerned please note that the chesnut filly out of Lucky Story mentioned last month has now been fully sold, but shares are still available in certain of our other horses. Please contact the office ( telephone 01969 624351 ) for details of the shares available.

January 2009

Welcome to 2009 everyone  --  and what a wonderful welcome to the New Year for our runners from Manor House Stables !  Performances from our runners during December 2008 suggested our horses had finally turned the corner and fully recovered from their ailments, and this has certainly proved to be the case at the start of 2009.

Just 2 days into the new year and the winner everyone at Manor House Stables has been looking for arrives courtesy of Hi Dancer in an Amateur Riders' Handicap over 2 miles at Southwell. The 6 year old, owned by Middleham Park Racing and R Tocher, won 3 races in 2006 and 4 races in 2007, but despite some consistent efforts had been winless since.    However, here he returns to form with a vengeance. Ridden by Emily Stead, Hi Dancer tracks the leaders in the early stages but being sent on over 2 furlongs out is soon clear, spread-eagling the field to win by no less than 11 lengths. This is a wonderful result for all concerned, but especially for Emily who works in the stable and who is registering her first success on only her second ride in public.

The following week Scutch Mill runs his best race for some time taking second place in a 1 mile one and a half furlong handicap at Wolverhampton, quickly followed by good performances from Bespoke Boy, also showing a welcome return to form finishing fourth at Great Leighs, River Ardeche also returning to form with a third place, at 66/1, in a Wolverhampton handicap, Scutch Mill quickly reappearing and finishing 4th in a Great Leighs handicap and Sheer Fantastic, also filling the same spot at Great Leighs.

The middle of the month proves a real purple patch as Patrick sends out 3 winners in 5 days. The run starts with Montevideo, who joined Manor House Stables during 2008, and shows improved form to take a Class 3 Handicap Chase over 3 miles one and a half furlongs at Catterick under a fine ride from Barry Keniry at odds of 20/1. Owned by J P McManus, Montevideo chases the leader in the early stages but needs to be switched a number of times in the straight, before staying on to lead inside the last 100 yards. The step up in trip appeared to suit the 9 year old but he was certainly given a tremendous ride by Barry.

3 days later Riguez Dancer travels down to Wolverhampton to contest a 1 mile 6 furlong handicap. This is Middleham Park Racings' 5 year olds first experience of the polytrack but he clearly relishes the surface. Riguez Dancer, ridden by Paddy Donaghy, is always prominent and leads fully 5 furlongs out staying on well allowing Paddy to ease him down near the finish and still win by a very comfortable 5 lengths !

The following day River Ardeche replicates the example of Riguez Dancer by recording a victory on his first experience of a new surface. This time it's Southwell's fibresand as the 4 year old, owned by Mark James and Mrs C Barclay, takes in a Class 4 one and a half mile handicap. Given a good front running ride by Paddy Donaghy, River Ardeche makes all and holds a 3 length lead coming into the straight, although the lead is reduced to half a length at the line. This is another improved performance from River Ardeche, reiterating his return form at Wolverhampton 8 days earlier, and this win is his first since his debut run at York in July 2007.

Just over a week later Riguez Dancer returns to Wolverhampton for a 2 mile handicap. This race turns out to be a procession for Riguez Dancer as Paddy Donaghy stretches the field from the early stages and is 10 lengths clear turning for home. Drawing further clear in the straight Riguez Dancer is eased by Paddy in the final furlong, yet still records an incredibly easy 12 lengths success. This is Paddy's 3rd victory in his last 4 rides for the stable, and also Middleham Park Racings' third win this month.

Since River Ardeche is in such good form he is given another opportunity before the month ends. Following a third place and a win on the all-weather, he this time shows his adaptability by running in a Class 4 Juvenile Novices' Hurdle over 2 miles at Catterick. No doubt because of his good recent form ( and that of our stable, of course ! ) River Ardeche is sent off favourite and attempts to lead for much of the race, and although running on well in the straight he is headed before the last and ultimately has to settle for second place. A good performance again nonetheless.

On the final day of the month Heraldry runs in a Class 3 Handicap Hurdle over 3 miles 1 furlong at Wetherby. The 9 year old, owned by Alurie O'Sullivan, is yet another runner from Manor House Stables for whom Patrick has succeeded in extracting improved form this month. A winner on his only previous visit to the course over 2 years ago Heraldry sports earplugs for the first time and after tracking the leaders leads approaching the last, and Felix De Giles riding the horse today is able to ease the 9 year old down in the closing stages whilst still recording an 11 lengths victory  --  an impressive performance indeed.

A tremendous start to 2009 for Manor House Stables  --  6 winners in January alone !  Patrick and Ben are justifiably delighted with the stables return to form, and the well-being of the horses. Lets hope this augers well for the rest of the year !

Away from the racecourse, all at Manor House Stables will be sorry to hear that Helen Cuming, our hard-working secretary, is leaving us at the end of February after 8 years service. We will miss Helen in the office and wish her well for the future.

Meanwhile we can report that another long-serving member of our staff, Teresa Molloy, has had a baby girl, Fay Iona, weighing in at 8lb 7oz. Many congratulations to both her and Pete and we look forward to Teresa returning to the stable in the not too distant future.

Finally, we would again remind readers who may be interested in purchasing a share in a horse trained at Manor House Stables  --  and given the current form of Patrick's horses there must surely be many  --  to look at our recently updated Horses For Sale page on this website. Ben is currently especially keen on a chesnut filly out of Lucky Story who is looking extremely promising on the gallops  --  100% of this filly is available for sale or, of course, smaller shares if you wish ( for costs please see the Horses For Sale page ). Shares are also still available in colts by Cape Cross, Footstepsinthesand ( now named Fleetwood Sands ) and Captain Rio ( now named Bothwell Castle ). As always, anyone interested in purchasing a share in any of these very promising 2 year olds should contact our office ( telephone 01969 624351 ) atany time. An early call will always avoid possible disappointment and also make Helens' final month working for the stable especially memorable and, hopefully, incredibly busy !

2008 News

December 2008

Following the 3 week break given to our horses in the latter part of November to allow them to recover from their earlier problems, our stable runners were back on track during the second week of December when Patrick sent two horses to contest a Class 2 Handicap Hurdle at Doncaster over a trip slightly in excess of 2 miles.

Both horses were fancied and both ran extremely well, but ultimately it was the 3 year old Duke Of Touraine who came out the better of our two runners finishing in second place, whilst the 4 year old Riguez Dancer occupied 3rd spot. Duke Of Touraine, under Barry Keniry, ran an exceptionally promising race, especially being the only 3 year old in the field, and was only beaten close to the line on what was quite demanding ground, the winning distance being just half a length. Riguez Dancer, ridden by Felix De Giles, led the field 4 out, but was soon ridden and weakened approaching the last to finish third.

One week later Riguez Dancer made the short journey to Newcastle to take in a Class 3 Handicap Hurdle. Again ridden by Felix De Giles, Riguez Dancer started joint favourite and was prominent in the early stages of the race before being outpaced from the second last on ground which deteriorated throughout the afternoon and which did not help Middleham Park Racing's 4 year old who would have appreciated a better surface.

On the final Sunday of the year Bespoke Boy made the even shorter journey to Catterick. Wendy Lucas' 3 year old had been campaigned as a sprinter on the Flat but this time tried his hand over 2 miles of a Class 4 Maiden Hurdle race. Bespoke Boy equipped himself well under the circumstances, patiently ridden by the stables conditional jockey, Warren Cafferty, Bespoke Boy was held up in the initial stages of the race before running on very promisingly from the second last. This was a good performance by Bespoke Boy and, having shown he gets a longer trip, this opens up new avenues for him in the future.

Despite the problems we have suffered in the latter months of 2008 our total prize money for the year reached a very creditable £142,463.15. There is real belief that the tide has finally turned, that our horses have now returned to good health and full fitness, and that we are ready to move into 2009 positively and confidently. Hopefully our next winner is just around the corner !

All readers who may at all be interested in buying a share in a horse trained by Patrick at our historic Manor House Stables is welcome to look at our "Horses For Sale" page of this website. The page has been recently updated and provides details of 2 year olds currently available for sale. Readers will note that shares are still available in very well bred colts out of Cape Cross, Footstepsinthesand and Captain Rio, as well as a chesnut filly recently purchased by Ben out of Lucky Story  --   the dam of this filly, Dance Of The Swans, was incidentally originally trained by Patrick and won her only 2 races for the stable. Lets hope history may repeat itself !

November 2008

Runners are still in short supply during November. Three of our novice chasers, Hi Dancer, John Dillon and Park's Prodigy, contest a Class 3 Novices' Handicap Chase at Wetherby and finish 4th, 5th and 6th. All 3 however remain good chasing prospects for the future.

Patrick and Ben are still not happy with the way the horses generally are performing and have addressed the position by taking the decision to have no runners for a 3 week period to allow the horses to be given a course of medication, etc. It is hoped this will finally alleviate the problem and enable us to put the last few months of 2008 behind us and to look onwards and upwards to 2009.

Hopefully there will be much more positive news from Manor House Stables in 2009. We hope you will continue to look at this website, whether you are an existing owner, a prospective owner, or simply an interested reader. As always we would draw attention to the " Horses For Sale " page, and especially at the moment to our brand new advertisement outlining the benefits in being an owner, or part-owner, of horses trained at Manor House Stables, Middleham, in beautiful Wensleydale,  --  simply click onto " Why Patrick ? " on the home page of this website.

We are confident all the problems of 2008 are now finally behind us and that once we've all enjoyed Christmas the winners will start flowing again from the stable, and 2009 will become an extremely successful and prosperous year for us all  --  everyone at Manor House Stables, all our owners, and readers of our website. Very best wishes from everyone at Manor House Stables.

October 2008

Again, not many runners from the stable during October though there is a pleasing performance from Monaco Mistress, upped in trip to 6 furlongs for the first time and following a 2 month break, in finishing 5th of 14 runners in a Class 5 Maiden Fillies Stakes at Redcar. Team Fashion Rocks 2 year old filly out of Acclamation makes good headway under Lee Enstone to chase the leaders over 2 furlongs out, keeping on at the same pace in the closing stages.

Everyone at Manor House Stables is already looking forward to next season and full details of the horses bought at Tattersalls October Yearling Sales in Newmarket, and which are available for sale ( or shares therein are for sale ), are now on the " Horses For Sale " page of this website. These yearlings are already looking extremely promising, and costs are exceptionally reasonable considering their breeding. Certainly each of the yearlings looks set to give their owners much fun and pleasure, and hopefully a nice profitable return as well, when they appear on a racecourse for the first time during 2009 !

Anyone interested in buying one of these yearlings ( or a share in one of the yearlings ) is welcome to contact the office at any time on tel. no. 01969 624351.
